Offline files

Hi,

I'd like to know if there's a way to force XP to use Offline files even it
sees the network connection? We're implementing Offline files for our
mobile users so essentially they have a backup on the server while they're
on the road. Problem is, when they sign on to our CheckPoint VPN, "Offile
files" will try to synchorize files over the VPN session. Worse is, it'll
try to open files from the network drive instead of using the local copy.
This adds a lot of delay and could sometimes, make the computer un-usable.

Your help is much appreciated.

Simon

From your post, my understanding of this issue is: You would like to know
how to force XP to use Offline Files even it sees the network connection.
If this is not correct, please feel free to let me know.

Unfortunately, this behavior is by design. However, you may refer to the
following steps to reduce the impact when the user uses slow network
connection:

Step 1. Configure Offline Files and Synchronize
=========================
1. Open Windows Explorer, click Tools -> Folder Options, and then click
Offline Files tab.
2. Clear "Synchronize all offline files when logging on" and "Synchronize
all offline files before logging off" checkboxes, and then click OK to quit
the dialog box.
3. Click Tools -> Synchronize, click Setup button.
4. Select the VPN connection from the dropped list, and then clear all the
checkboxes under Offline Files.
5. Clear "When I log on to my computer" and "When I log off my computer"
checkboxes.
6. Mark "Ask me before synchronizing the items" checkbox, and then click OK
to quit.

Note: Above configuration will prevent XP from synchronizing the Offline
Files automatically to reduce the possible delay, but the user has to
synchronize the Offline Files manually when goes back to the office or
needs files synchronization: Open Windows Explorer, Click Tools ->
Synchronize, select Offline Files and then click Synchronize.

Step 2. Copy offline files when out of office
=========================
When the user is on the road and would like to use offline files, he may
copy the offline files to a folder such as My Documents before he signs on
VPN. To copy the offline files, you may refer to the following way:
1. Open Windows Explorer, click Tools -> Folder Options, and then click
Offline Files tab.
2. Click View Files button, and then select the files needed, click Edit ->
Copy.
3. Locate a folder such as My Documents and then click Edit -> Paste to
copy the files to this folder.
4. After signing on the VPN connection, the user should open the files from
My Documents to work with the files.

Hope this helps!

Have a nice week!

Sincerely,
Tom Che

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. It's unfortunate that I can't fully control offline
files behaviour. I'll check out your suggestions, thanks.

We have the exact same problem with offline files over VPN connections and
I'm sure there's tons of poeple out there in the same boat as Simon and I.
Microsoft should absolutely make it an option to control which version of the
file you use under any circumstance, even if the server version is available.
This issue is killing us and our remote users and we'll probably have to end
up moving everyone's data off the servers because of it. I would think that
Microsoft should be able to tell us how to control this behavior and not
respond that it's by design, because if this is by design then it's a poorly
thought through design.

Does anyone know how to control offline files over slow connections so that
it will use the offline version even if it sees the server?

Thank you, Darin Oliver, MCSE
