Office Button, Server not there

According to Office 2007 help, Word & Excel are supposed to let you click on
the Office Button, then click "Server" for check in and check out. It is
missing on my Office 2007 Enterprise applications, even though I have done a
complete install. How would one fix this to get it to appear?
 
Withdrawn - it appears that it only shows up *after* you open a document
from a SharePoint site.
