To add to what Shenan said: because it will give a cleaner system, and
less chance for things to get messed up (with remnants and associations from
the previous Office version still remaining, etc, etc).
But as he pointed out, it would be wise to have a backup, and I'd say a
system backup (clone or image), just in case don't work out right.
