Office 2000 meeting reminders can't be deleted

I recently updated my Office 2000, and now all Outlook meeting reminders last
forever. Once the reminder has occurred, I cannot get rid of it, even if I
delete the original event. Dismissing it does not work, closing the reminder
does not work. The only relief is by snoozing for a long time, but that is
only temporary! What a nightmare - like the movie "Ground Hog Day"!
