I recently purchased an INSIGNIA 300a (and I will not recommend it to anyone)
with the propriatary version of XP Home. I cannot get the security tab to
show in the properties window. I went to folder options but the simple file
and folder sharing option is not there to clear (windows instructions). I
contacted INSIGNIA and they passed the buck saying to contact Windows or Geek
Squad... I know it's a setting in the registry. I'm not an idiot when it
comes to computers. I am actually a network system admin at an AFB so please
somebody explain to me what value (and where) in the registry to change this.
I must point out that this is not he only issue that leads me to believe it
is a registry setting, however, this is my number one peive and I can live
with the others. Any help or suggestions (other that purchasing another
computer or my own version of windows xp home) would be apperciated.

This is a limitation of XP Home Edition. You have to be in Safe Mode to
set NTFS securities and you cannot turn off Simple File Sharing, period.
It is not a registry setting and it has nothing to do with it being OEM,
it all because it is Home Edition. To overcome these and other
limitations use Windows XP Professional Edition.

Doug Knox and I have utilities that can give you the security tab on XP
Home. However, both Doug Knox's utility and my utility are 3rd party
solutions (and probably not as stable as Windows' own security tab).
The most stable solution is to do all your acl edits in safe mode.

Doug Knox's solution involves getting an NT4 utility: the Security
Configuration Editor, available at:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/scm/default.asp
This editor was designed for NT4; it does not work as well in Windows XP.

My solution involves getting a utility written by me: Filepermsbox 1.09.
Of course, you'll probably trust me less than Microsoft (and with good reason).
If you are interested, you can get Filepermsbox at
