This is my problem.
I purchased an e-Machine with Windows XP. After the
warranty period the hard drive failed. The damage was such
that the repair company had to replace the CPU, mother
board, and modem. The restore CD which contains Windows Xp
will no longer load into my machine with all thes new
components.
I am presently running Windows 98 that came off my old
computer.
Is there any way I can reinstall windows Xp without buying
The XP upgrade for about $100?

Hi John
Effectively by changing the motherboard to another model and changing other
parts you have created a new machine. On an OEM copy you can't legally move
it to another machine as the license is for the hardware it was sold with.
So you would need to purchase the upgrade to use XP on your machine. I would
assume emachines setup would also block you because it does not recognise
the machine as one of their own.
