I have a son who wishes his e-mail to remain confidential.
I want to look at his mail without his knowledge to see
what's going on. I do not know his password. I want to
know if anyone knows how to do this or if the mail is
saved anywhere or in a file that I may be able to review?

If he uses a POP client, like OE or OL configured with a POP account, and if
you have physical acces to his machine you can do what you want. However,
if his mail account is a, say, Hotmail or Yahoo! account read with a web
browser, you're out of luck.

Sounds like you have a problem that requires a socially-engineered solution
rather than a technological one. My response to my child would be, "So, I
can't check your E-mail, eh? Then the computer is mine. If you don't like
my rules, live somewhere with rules to your liking. I'll miss you terribly
when you go, and I'd rather you didn't leave, but you have to decide what's
more important: your E-mail or a roof over your head and food to eat."

Of course, I may, in reality, not be quite that harsh, but, after all, it's
_my_ responsibility to keep my child safe, and I'll use any means I know to
do that.
