Odd, non-post beeping

Just AVG ... but I've also had HijackThis running at boot on this
machine since long before this problem. There haven't been any
changes to the system for quite some time now ... no programs
installed, no registry changes, nothing.

Here's a repost because I got confused who I was replying to. Your posts
are not coming up in the order of the thread.

My laptop beeps if I don't log on right away after powering it up
because of a recent update to AVG Free. It tries to auto-update before
the user logs on a little bit after power up. When it completes the
update, it does a motherboard type beep. It does not do this if you're
logged in and it tries to update. this could be your culprit.

Cheers,

Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Well, the thing is this hasn't beeped during boot ever (except th
usual one beep at post). It beeps when the machine's been on for som
hours usually. Plus, AVG beep may soun
like a motherboard beep ... but is it really from the system speaker
I'm using headphones for sound right now and it's not coming throug
them. It's definately coming from the system speaker

Same here, via wireless, and it updates before the logon with the latest
AVG Free build.

Ahh okay.

Have you rebooted after a beep/blonk and looked at the temps reported in
the BIOS (sorry, I haven't read this entire thread).

Motherboard Monitor (MBM)

Sadly the BIOS seems to have been idiot proofed and it doesn't report any
temperatures. The fan really kicks on when I'm in the BIOS though and a lot
ofhot air gets pushed out (avoiding political joke). MBM doesn't seem to
support the motherboard in my laptop unfortunatly.

Sometimes to get to advanced features of the BIOS there's a hotkey that
needs to be pressed, like F10 or F1 once you're already in the BIOS
screen. I know that gigabyte do (or did) this as standard practice.

Resolved

Well, I replaced the psu and the beeping didn't go away (psu had to b
replaced anyway)

Then I noticed that I could make the system speaker beep by emptyin
the recycle bin. It's not the only thing that makes it beep, but
was able to repeat the effect. Did a search, apparently it is som
feature - or error - of win2k. Anyone else having this problem
download Tweakui and set it NOT to beep on error (like emptying th
recycle bin is an error!

You need Tweakui to adjust system sounds in Windows 2000?

You need Tweakui to adjust system sounds in Windows 2000

If you turn all the system sounds (the wavs) off, some copies of win2
or win2k on some motherboards seems to want to use the PC speaker, an
then no, there seems to be no way to control it short of using TweakU
to turn off the error beeps
