Odd Googlegroups phenomenon

Using WM in Outlook Newsreader mode.
When replying to a post in an MS Newsgroup that has been posted from
Googlegroups, the ">" character is missing from the quoted text and I have
to add it. Why should this be?
(Thunderbird replies correctly, adding the ">" character to each line of
quoted text).

My first guess would be HTML vs. Plain Text. If I reply to an HTML message,
I don't get a ">", rather, I get an indented line.

It's a limitation that OE had also, in that Quoted-Printable
text can't be indented with the ">" character. That limitation
has been fixed in the newer Windows Live Mail, to which you
are welcome to upgrade: http://download.live.com/wlmail
