Odd Folders Being Created

On 3 of my Windows XP machines I am finding folders in the C drive with what
appears to be random file names. For example:
e7feff30971f9dbb3f7d2adb90efef89 and
caa45017b67e8fdd1f949e

The sufolders (named update) are protected and I am unable to open them.

Some of the folders are empty and deletable, other have subfolders and are
protected. Does anyone know what causes these?

When I installed NET Framework 3.5 a folder like that
was also created on my pc.I assume it's needed for 3.5
though unsure why it was installed outside of the
Windows folder and the reason for the long number
name.I left it alone but would also like to know if
it's needed.

Hi Bob,

They are temp folders and can be removed. They wind up on just about
every workstation I touch, mostly from .NET updates.
