Windows XP w/SP2 loses Device Manager

Problem: after installling the service packs for XP SP2 from October 2005
Device Manager loses all of its icons.

Cuased by: installaing SP905749

Solution:
go to: C:\WINDOWS\$NTUninstallKB905749$\SPUNIST\
run SPUNINST.EXE

This will remove Service Pack 905749 and bring back the missing objects in
Device Manager.
Also go back and hide the SP905749 from being updated in the future from
with the Windows Update web page.

Yes, this may be the case on your machine but I haven't seen it on any
of the dozen or so client machines I've worked on since the patches,
any of the roughly 150 machines at our school, or any of my own Windows
machines (6, all with different configurations). It would be
interesting and useful to know if you have any unusual
hardware/software installed that would cause this.

Another fix for an empty Device Manager is (from MVP Ramesh) is to log
into an account with Administrative privileges and do:
Start>Run>regsvr32 devmgr.dll [enter]
