Is there any good OCR-Freeware, that can be used with the Mustek 1200 UB?

Thank you very much for your suggestion.

Program: SimpleOCR
Author: (Cyril Cambien (original author))
Ware: Freeware (free for non-commercial use)
http://www.simpleocr.com/

Please note: ACF's resident experts on OCR say the best commercial apps are significantly better.

Webware:

DocMorph
http://docmorph.nlm.nih.gov/docmorph/
Document conversion tools (50 types of files) Convert to PDF; TIFF; text; synthesized speech

ExperVision
http://www.expervision.com/webtr6.htm
Convert images to text. WebOCR accepts color; grayscale and B/W images from either scanner or file.

I believe this site won't *read* .pdf files, which is a shame.

Don't really understand why "the resource-consuming recognition
-process is done by ExperVision's FREE OCR server" since the process
isn't really *that* resource consuming. That is, unless they believe
that at some point in the future they can pull the rug out from under
the software by shutting down that server. And yes, you do have to
install stuff on your system. Not only that, but:

Still, I suppose either of these sites would serve if a person is desperate.

Yikes! Thanks for pointing that out. Good grief - look at all the requirements to use their
"on-line" service:

http://www.expervision.com/webtr6_system.htm

<q>
WebOCR (Beta1) System Requirements

* IBM Personal Computer or compatible with 486 CPU or higher
* Microsoft Windows 95 or later/Windows NT 4.0 or later
* 30MB of free hard disk space
* 16 MB or more of internal memory (RAM)
* A VGA or higher resolution video monitor
* Internet connection
</q>

lick here to launch the download. You can either choose "Save this file to disk" to download the
self-extracted file (~6.5MB) to your local drive and run it from there or choose "Open this file
from its current location" to run the installation directly.

1. Install WebOCR

Run SETUP.EXE and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

2. Set up the OCR web service server

Launch WebOCR. Select menu [Process/Options] or click quick-launch button [Options]. This will
launch the Options dialog. Then go to "OCR Web Service Server", add ExperVision's free OCR server
64.214.96.98 to your server list. The port number is 7777.

3. Then sit back and enjoy WebOCR's greatest features.

FWIW - I registered by filling in a few nonsense characters in the boxes - that worked just fine.

I'll remove ExperVision from the Webware page (real soon now) since it requires installation of an
app on your computer. Thanks again for posting about this.
