If you obtain the update via http://get.adobe.com/reader/ you will
get a Google Toolbar annoyance.

I updated through Acrobat, but when it wanted to restart the computer I
decided to download MS's updates first. I don't know if that was a
mistake or I just hit a bad patch on Microsoft's server, but things
really went haywire. The latter stalled at the end of downloading
update 4 (977816), just like it did either last month or the one
before. Closed and tried again, leading to a seeming stall out at
update 6 (979309). Perhaps these were larger files, but they sure sat
there a long time. After a system restore, some restarts, some forced
shutdowns of XP and IE and such, I finally got both update sets in and
everything working right. Whew!

Updating through Adobe Reader might have been better but I had not thought
of that, it probably yielded the same outcome, I hope !

If your MS Patches are not quite the way you like them Gene, call MS @
1-866-727-2338, this a free 24 by 7 service provided by MS, if you need it.

I fetched about 8 patches, rebooted and have not had any issues, though it may
be a bit early to tell.

I have CS3, thus Acrobat. With MS, it's the process of downloading
that's seeming to stall, not the install. Someone else last month or
the one before reported running into the same thing.

I'm sorry to read you are having issues with MS Patches, Gene.
As noted in my earlier reply, see below as this is what I would do.
I have zero tolerance for failed MS Patches.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi Gene:

I have my Win XP SP3 Home Windows Automatic Updates feature set to notify
but not download MS updates. When I select "Download" of the updates from
the Win XP Update gold icon in the taskbar, it's not unusual for the
downloads to stall and the Win update icon to disappear. I then end up using
the "MS Update" feature from the start menu that uses IE. Doing the updates
from IE works well and overcomes the Win updater problem. However, after
performing the updates via IE, with all updates successfully downloaded and
installed, the Win updater display a message that the updates that it
downloaded before stalling out have been downloaded and are ready for
installation - even though these updates have already been performed.

It's annoying. I have to keep reminding myself to use the Windows Automatic
Updates feature only to receive notification that new updates are available,
and then to use "MS Update" via IE to download and install them.

I believe if you tell the AU icon to go ahead and install, it won't do any
harm--it won't install again over what is already there.
