:o( ... How do I configure my routing table???

Hi,

I'm not a network guru :blush:) ... so I hope you can help me out.

When logged onto my VPN acoount my internet requests are routed through the
VPN instead of my WLAN (Wireless lan).

Here's my IP ranges:

172.18.90.x = My VPN IP range
172.18.90.252 = The VPN's gateway
192.168.2.1 = My WLAN gateway
192.168.2.x = My WLAN range.

If I understand this correct, the 255.255.255.255 255.255.255.255 is the one
that catches all internet traffic?? The VPN IP is 172.18.90.109, so this
would explain why it "catches" all traffic.

The internet traffic should go throug my WLAN's gateway 192.168.2.1.

I have no clue on how to do this.

Can you give me a hint?

Thanks!!!!

The 0.0.0.0 entry (default gateway) is the one that catches all
Internet traffic. I see a default gateway entry that uses your LAN,
but I don't see a default gateway entry that uses the VPN. So, I
don't think that this route table could cause all Internet traffic to
use the VPN. Only traffic to 172.18.x.x would use the VPN.

An entry like this would cause all Internet traffic to use the VPN:

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.18.x.x 172.18.90.109 1

Did you capture the route table while the VPN connection was active?
I suspect not. If the VPN connection was active, then another
possibility is that the VPN provides a proxy server for Internet
access. Proxy servers don't appear in the route table.

The usual cure for the VPN gateway problem, without a proxy server,
is:

1. Go into the VPN connection's Properties | Networking | Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) | Properties | Advanced.

2. Un-check "Use default gateway on remote network".

Two notes of caution:

1. If you VPN into a corporate network, tell the IT staff what you
want to do and ask them whether "split tunneling" (connecting
simultaneously to the VPN and the Internet on the same computer) is
allowed. Some companies forbid it because of the security risk to the
corporate network: your Internet access would be outside the corporate
firewall.

2. If the network that you VPN into has more than one subnet, you'll
need to define routes to other subnets after disabling the default
gateway on the VPN connection.

Hi Steve,

Thank you very much for your answer!!

I was online when I did the Route print.

Your post leads me to think, that my ISA (at work) is "taking over" the
internet traffic when using the VPN.

You see, at home I've got a 4 MBit line and at work I've got a 2 MBit line.
I'm usually always connected to work for several reasons. It bites me to
slow down to the 2 MBit when surfing the net.

I can see the security problem here (regarding hackers), but I need to find
out why ISA is stealing my traffic and if I can split it. I will look into
the split tunnulling (if it's my solution).

Thank you again!!!!!!!

If you are using IE (or another wininet powered client) it may be
automatically detecting your corporate proxy when you are VPNed.

This is the effect of the "Automatically Detect Settings" checkbox in IE's
"LAN Settings" settings.

The ISA Firewall Client might do something similar but I'm not as familiar.
