Nvidia Defector

Hi,

Have been an NVIDIA user for years and never took ATI seriously, until
recently.

I currently have a Hercules geforce 3 and am looking at upgrading, its time
for Christmas
shopping in the form of an 9800 pro, but I have a couple of concerns.

1. My main concerns are game compatibility, I play C&C generals and first
person
shooters, halo, nightfire, medal of honor etc.
Are the problems with the drivers getting better, i.e. will I buy this card
and
be unable to play a lot of my games?

2. Which make of card? I like the crucial 9800 pro as they have good support
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.asp?imodule=CTV9800P128A28&cat=Video+Card
is this model ok? I would love to get the Hercules but reviews show no
difference in performance.

Any feedback appreciated.

What driver problems? I have had no driver problems at all (apart from a
corrupted install at the begining of the year)
I am playing all current games with no problems at all (Including Halo!)

I think the Crucial one is based on the reference design, Hercules might
have ram sinks and stuff (like on my 9700Pro)
They (crucial) offer a limited lifetime warranty too, that is something to
consider.

You're describing the exact same position I was in six months ago. I'd used
Nvidia cards since I bought my PC in 1999 (when the TNT2 Ultra was fast!)
and I'd had Nvidia cards every since.

I was looking for something to replace my GeForce 3 six months ago, and
it was originally going to be the FX, but after hearing the complaints about
the sound of the fan and the blocking of a PCI slot I decided against it
and bought a 9700 Pro.

I haven't looked back. I've had no problems whatsoever with it and
I'd recommend it to anyone. I play all my games in full AA and AF
(apart from Splinter Cell :)). First person shooters are my favourite
type of game so I can vouch for the fact that you'll have no problem
Halo or Medal Of Honor.

I bought my card from Crucial and it's been fine.

Win XP Pro
ATI Radeon 9700Pro
1Gb DDR PC2100 RAM
8Gb Hard Disk
80Gb Secondary Hard Disk
Creative Audigy 2
ASUS A7V333 mobo
Samsung SM352 DVD/RW combo
oh yeah, and a 56K modem :-(

Ditto.

I was Nvidia fanboy from TNT2 days. Had a Geforce 2 after that...then a
Geforce 3...then a Geforce 4 TI200. Then I tried an FX.....to
slow....returned it for a 9800 Pro.....wow!!....no regrets. Plays all my
games w/no probs.

I'm playing Splinter Cell right now on my 9700p at 1280x1024x32 with
6xFSAA. The missing AA is a bit annoying, but it looks so amazingly good
without it I could care less!

And I´m another one.....
Started out in -96 with a Trident, moved on to voodo cards in SLI.
After that TNT2Ultra, GeforceDDR, GTS2, GF3, Ti4600 and then saw the light
in a 9500Pro.
Running a Hercules 9800Pro now and will stick to it for some time.....
Most welcome..

Forget all the fanboys, and check out some real end user results at
rage3d.com forums. ATI *does* have driver problems, and if you play
allot of openGL based games you might run into problems. For example
Call of duty, Tribes 2, and other openGL based games have issues.

I just got a Radeon 9600 PRO myself, and so far, the openGL drivers
from ATI are much crappier than Nvidias. DX seems to be OK, but I
don't have many DX games. They just released 3.9 drivers, and those
still have issues as noted in those forums.

Bottom line is, read all the posts, and judge for yourself.

Yes i am aware of issues with drivers, but at least ati seem to be
addressing this
and there is a fix for the problem you mentioned regarding cat 3.9.

Main reason for going with ati is i have lost faith in nvidia after 5800
(dustbuster) series and the cheating.

Thanks to all for all the feedback.
