Nvidia Aero long story...

T

Tim Payne

Follow me on this:

1. Have run all CPP releases of Vista to date, Beta 2 thru RC2. Dual boot
with XP, DVD boot installations with Vista partition format every time.
SHA1 verified, burn verified each disc.
2. Previous video card was Radeon 9600XT - Aero worked by default with all
releases, including stock drivers and ATI drivers.
3. Running RC2 with stock Radeon drivers, powered down and swapped in a new
Nvidia 7600GS.
4. On reboot, Vista loaded stock Nvidia drivers, with Aero.
5. Fresh re-install RC2. No Aero, not even an option. Nvidia RC2 drivers
not yet released, so tried RC1 drivers (earlier than stock RC2 drivers). No
Aero. Re-install RC2 again, no Aero.
6. Fresh re-install RC1. No Aero by default, but enabled Aero thru Control
Panel.
7. Fresh re-install RC1 Update. No Aero by default, but enabled Aero thru
Control Panel.
8. Fresh re-install RC2. No Aero, not even an option. Loaded Nvidia
drivers for RC2, still no Aero.
9. Found registry hack and net uxsms stop/start. Aero enabled. (YES!!!)
10. (The Payoff) One last RC2 re-install. Aero WORKS by default. Loaded
Nvidia RC2 drivers, Aero still working.

So why did Aero work after the last re-install of RC2 when it wouldn't
before? How could the registry hack have survived the re-install (again,
formatted the partition each time)?

Says to me it may be something in the hardware?

Power related? Antec 400W PSU powering BFG 7600GS AGP (power connected),
Audigy 2ZS, 1 hard drive, 1 optical drive - not a big load. MB is Asus
P4P800SE running Prescott P4 3.2 Socket 478. All stock speeds.

Just wanted to document this and put it out there in light of all the
previous Nvidia Aero discussions. Anyone have a similar experience? Anyone
still fighting with Aero on Nvidia?

Tim.

Tim--

Interesting. You've sure gone the mile in reinstalls to get that card lit
up.

I'd sure like to see the reghack--(btw did you check to make sure it
survived the reinstall?) and if you or anyone knows the functionality of the
reghack I'd appreciate hearing is your PSU. When I saw the post at first, I
was going to pick on your power supply, until I read what you had on the box
and that's enough power to run that card fine at all temps.

I installed the same card on one of my boxes. Since it had an older
proprietary Dell PSU, I had to replace the power supply. But you shouldn't,
so I'm not sure what the problem was--unless you have added parts with more
demand than I see here.

Sorry for the run-in sentence above. It should have read "if you or anyone
knows the functionality of the reghack in getting glass up and running--(btw
did you check to make sure it survived the last reinstall?) I'd apprecaite
hearing."

Was this the reghack you used?

Yoshi--

Once I updated the power supply the card easily shows Aero, it's spinoffs
and mods. But I was after understanding the physiology of how those
regedits in my links and yours interact with the hardware and software--i.e.
what they do/how and where they work and why so I could understand them
better.

Thanks --link much appreciated though.

While I know much of it, I wish I understood the complete story of how it
went from Paul Allen and his sister's control at Vulcan Ventures to Comcast
and then Comcast ran Tech TV in the US into the ground with G4 interesting
for adolescent gamers with Valley Girl sentences. They sacked a great
computer help show at a lot of levels hdw, software, MSFT, Apple, Linux and
more.

That's the hack. I won't begin to pretend I know what the hack does! :)

I'm not on my desktop now, and I haven't actually checked that the registry
values are the same as before the reinstall. I merely meant that Aero
survived the re-install.
