I am trying to create an outline.
In the past, every time I typed in "1" etc MS Word would automatically enter
in "2" when I pressed enter.
How can I change the settings so it can default to this, instead of having
to select the text, right click, and select the numbering manually (which is
an inconvenience).
This happens every time I open a new document.

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | AutoCorrect Options |
AutoFormat As You Type tab | check the "Automatic numbered lists"
box | OK.

HoginFinancial,

To open the AutoCorrect dialog box for Word 2007: Click Office button | Word
Options. In the Proofing category, click AutoCorrect Options.

But note that this is not the recommended approach. Instead, you should set
up numbered styles and use them; that way, you'll get control over
numbering. For single-level numbering you could just apply the List Number
style.

For multilevel numbering, use Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New
Multilevel List. See also
