numbering the query result records

My query is against a table for which the primary key is a complex number.

Therefore in the query result itself I would like also to have a simple
numbering field (starting with 1) of each query record result.

This way discussion can more easily be facilitated i.e. "take a look at
record 16"....rather than the complex number field of the key

is there a count, sum or join to a number table or something to accomplish
this??

You would need to have a field or fields that can be used to describe the
"numbering". There are lots of regular questions and replies regarding
ranking in a query.

It's very easy accomplish this in a report. Would that meet your needs?
