numbering lists

Hello,

I have a record collection, sorted by artist and listed by number. So far
so good. However if I now buy another record by an artist in the middle of
the list I have to manually renumber every record. Is there a way around
this?

Why do you need the number? What are you using the number for?

After answering that, we can look into ways of doing what you want.

I suspect you don't need any number.

Dear Joseph,

You are quite correct. "my" record database is actually for a guy I not
connected to the internet. I suggested he change the database structure but
he is not keen. Basically I think he wants to know how many records he has.

Well I think we still need more information about what he has in order
to answer the question. Not knowing if the field is a number field or a
text field is one problem.
