Numbering - keeping font formatting

I write procedural documents that consist of numbered steps, for which I
created styles.

Very often, if I apply the numbering style, or restart a numbered list, the
font formatting (e.g. bold or italics) in remains in a few of the numbered
steps but not in others.

I've tried to determine what the determining factors are but haven't been
successful.

This is quite a big problem since I have several hundred pages of numbered
steps to maintain.

Can anyone help please?

I forgot to mention, I also tried nesting styles (bold, italic) within the
list numbering style, but it seems that only one style tag is allowed in a
numbered list.

Hello,

I had already applied the numbering using paragraph styles. However, I found
the solution was to create character styles (e.g. bold, italic) and apply
them within the numbered steps. If one has to restart the list numbering, or
reapply the list numbering style, the internal character format remains.

Voila!

I'm glad you got it sorted.
