I have several pages of items arranged in 3 columns and can't figure out how
to automatically number the list. I have tried selecting the entire list and
click on the number button and all that happens is the number 1.
I would appreciate your help.
TIA

Are you saying that all items get the number 1 or is only the first
item being numbered? If you press Ctrl+Shift+8, how many paragraphs,
indicated by the ¶ symbol, is there in the document?

Only the first item gets numbered. There are five pages and five ¶ symbols,
one at the bottom of each page.

How are you applying the numbering? Have you tried using the built-in List
Number style?

What I have tried is Selecting all the items in the document [38 items per
page - five pages] and clicking the "Numbering" button. I am assuming this
is what you mean by "the built-in List Number style". If I am assuming
incorrectly please help me to understand what you are referring to.

Once again, Thank You for your help.

Numbering applies to paragraphs, and since you are having 38 items per page
but only 1 paragraph (as indicated by the paragraph mark), this is the
problem. Use Enter to split into text paragraphs at the appropriate
locations. Does the numbering work now?

FWIW, List Number is a paragraph style which can be applied in various
different ways. The exact steps depend on which version of Word you are
using.

Thank You very much; yes, that works. Now is there an automated or easy way
of turning all the items into paragraphs beside - End/Delete/Enter repeated
for each item in the list approximately 600?

I am using MS Office Small Business Edition 2003.

Automating this is possible if something can be used to identify the end of
one item and the start of the following one. For example, if they are
separated by line breaks (see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/NonPrintChars.htm), you can use Edit |
Replace, and replace ^l with ^p.

To apply a style, you can use the Style box on the Formatting toolbar. Hold
Shift as you press the arrow (this forces all styles to display). Scroll down
until you find the style you need (List Number in this case).
