Number sequencing in Word 2007

I have a 26 page document that I formatted with different numbering sequences
throughout the document. When I added a table of contents to the document
,it messed up my numbering sequences. I've tried clearing the formatting and
assigning a new sequence and it pulls from the initial format. Any advice?
