Number Question

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how I can use Excel to delete dashes in a column of numbers
and, if possible, add a zero to each of those numbers? I have two files which
I download from a mainframe and which I am trying to merge and sort. I will
sort the data by account number. However, one of the account numbers begins
with a zero and the contains dashes. (i.e. 04568653 and 4-5686-53) I don't
think I can properly sort the two numbers without taking out the dashes and
adding a zero to the second example. So how do I sort these numbers? What I
thought I would try to do is to make the second number look exactly like the
first and than sort Have many numbers so doing it manually is a waste of time.

Thanks

Hi
1. Use 'Edit - Replace' to remove all dashes
2. Format the column with a custom format such as
00000000

OK. I can now add a zero to all numbers. But I don't know what to do with
"Edit-Replace" to remove all the dashes from a column of numbers. I highlight
a column, click "Edit-Replace" but don't know what else to do. I think I need
something that tell the program to remove all the dashes in the highlighted
area all at once. Do I have to insert a format in the "Replace With" section"?
Or???

Thanks, I'm getting there...It's part of a huge task I am doing at work and the
people who had it before me did many things manually and got burnt out and are
no longer there. I refuse to fall in that trap.
