Number of characters shown in one cell?

I am working with a spreadsheet where I have cells with a lot of text (up to app. 500 characters). But when I exceed a certain number of characters the cell can only display ####. I have used the function "wrap text" right from the beginning, and I use "shift"+"enter" after each short sentence.
Can anybody help to figure out, how I get Excel to display all the text?

To break a line use ALT+ENTER (not SHIFT)
A cell can display up to 1024 characters

If you have that cell formatted as Text, try changing it to General.
