Number Format using dashes

I am listing part numbers on a spreadsheet. Some part
numbers have dashes (ie. 1-1234) Is there a way to format
this as a number with the dash, without changing it to
a "text" entry?

If I make it a "text" entry, it cannot be sorted
numerically.

Hi
For your example data (assumption: 5 digits, 1 digit before the dash)
the custom format
0-0000
will work

Hi Frank,
I tried that and it turned the number 1-9795 into 288-3592
Any more suggestions??

I dont think so , but you should be able to sort with no problem. What version
XL are you using?

Hi

that is easy. You have first entered your value '1-9795'. Excel has
interpreted this as a date. After appleying the custom format the date
value is converted. So to use this format do the following:

1. Apply the new format prior to entering data

2. Enter your data (without dash)
