I had this problem in 2002 when building my own system
using a brand new Seagate drive having used the disk
manager. Overcame the problem by downloading the Windows
XP boot disk file and booting from floppy to begin

It is the primary boot loader for the XP system.

One possibility is that you have a dual boot system, having installed it
from Win98 or ME, in which case that file should be in the C drive with
the 98/ME. If something has set the XP partition as the active one, it
will not be found. You need to use the 98 start up floppy and its FDISK
to set C as active.

If it is a straight boot of the XP partition, Set the BIOS to boot CD
before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the
immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB
over. Use the COPY Command to
COPY x:\i386\ntldr
where x is the CD drive letter

Hi Alex

Isn't it easier to use the Recovery Console to copy NTLDR from the XP CD to C: - or whatever letter the system drive has?
