I can't boot. MSKB says to call MS for bcupdate2 utility , but they're
closed. Please help.
PS. I had an article on how to copy the file, but my daughter HAD to go to
my space and she closed my tab.
PPS. Neither box has a floppy

You need to take the time to describe your problem in
detail. Having "ntldr" and "MSKB" and nothing else in
your post is just not sufficient.

XP Pro SP2. It runs the POST, displays the XP splash, then errors with ntldr
is missing...use C-A-D to restart. The MicroSoft Knoweledge Base says to
call MicroSoft to obtain a utility called bcupdate2.
I am NOT a DOS person. I geeked around with chdir but it always comes
back to C:\Windows. Right now, I'm loading XP on a spare drive, and I'll try
to copy ntldr from there to my C drive.
Sorry about the cryptic message. I read the 1000 headers I downloaded and
didn't see this problem listed.

Try this quick method to establish if your WinXP installation
still exists:
- Format a floppy disk on some other WinXP/2000 PC.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your WinXP CD to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP"
/fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy

If you can boot into WinXP then it should not be too hard to
restore normal operation.

It would be helpful if you posted the recent history of this PC.
Something must have changed to cause this behaviour!

Good point. Two ways to get around this one:
- Burn a bootable CD based on the above boot floppy, then
boot the machine with this CD.
- Check if there is a floppy controller port on the motherboard,
then buy a floppy disk drive and a ribbon cable to suit. They
cost very little.

Try this:

Boot with your XP CD in the cd drive. Select 'To repair..' by pressing 'R'.
When in the Recovery Console type the following:

"copy X:\i386\ntldr C:\" - without the quotes.

Where X is the letter of your CD drive and C is the letter of your system
drive. Take the XP CD out of the cd drive and reboot into XP normally.

From a newsgroup post by late Mr.Alex Nichol, Microsoft MVP:

The MBR code hands the boot on to the Active partition; the boot code in

that loads NTLDR. There are two cases:

"NTLDR not found" at all may arise because the incorrect partition has been
set as active. This can happen if you have a dual boot and have messed with
the files in that partition that boot; this is not the XP one, or have
shifted the boot to the XP partition which does not have NTLDR in it.

"NTLDR damaged" means what it says, the file is there but not working.

Either way, if you have a proper retail type XP CD, not some maker's
recovery disk:

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of
Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is
blank, and TAB over. Assuming this sees the CD as D (likely) give:

COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\
COPY D:\i386\ntdetect C:\
(a file that may also be missing)
then rebuild the boot configuration boot.ini file by
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
(if not found skip the next line)
DEL C:\boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild

SUUUUURE, now I read this. I'm formatting my new HDD at this moment. I tried
3 different 'boot' cd's, and I've used all commands on the help menu! It was
time for this anyway, I was waiting for Vista as an excuse. I will try your
method tomorrow. Then, I'll have time to sort the progs I want to keep.
