NTLDR is missing

I keep getting a "NTLDR is missing" error message when I try to boot up my XP
Home Edition. My question is this...I bought my system back in 2002 & it
came with WinXP already installed, unfortunately I didn't know at the time
that I should have asked for a CD. Anyways, I am considering doing the
6-floppy disk boot up procedure, but I beginning to hear that the OEM system
XPs are different than the rest. If this is true, would I be able to use
this 6-floppy...process, or would I have to use some other way to boot up if
I do have a OEM computer? I would greatly appreciate any time or effort
anyone makes to help me resolve this issue. And Thank You!!!

I have just gone thru the 6 diskette install, it still ask you for a XP home
SP2 CD for a repair install. It can get you into Repair mode, but you need
all the knowledge and tools and backups to fix any problem you can find.

The solution seems to be buy (or borrow if you have a valid key) a retail XP
from MS.

Unfortunately I think that you are probably right. Some1 was just telling me
that I might want to try transferring all of my stuff from my hard drive to
another. Perform a Full system recovery, then transfer back all of my stuff.
Either way seem to be a Big Pain In The A#%@. Thnx anyways.

Maybe you could boot knoppix, then mount the filesystem, overwrite
ntldr and so forth? from knoppix, you'll have internet access at
least.

Thnx Thufir, but I don't know what a "knoppix" is. And as far as gaining
access to the internet, well I don't use that one to surf the net. I am just
trying to save my journal entries on my ex's behavior towards our son. If I
lose that, basically, I'm pretty much screwed. Excuse my language.

Oh, you should have said you were trying to do data recovery. That's
totally different and very easy.

Remove the drive from the system and attach it to any other XP system as a
secondary drive - if this has something you need to save, get a USB drive
case, $20 - $30. Attach the drive to the other system, and simply copy your
files off. YOu may need to Take Ownership if you get "access denied"
messages.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Once you have the case together you can be done this in half an hour or
less. Put the drive away in a safe place, the data is worth more than the
drive.

If you want to make that machine work again, get anotehr drive (250 gig
drives can be had for under $75) install it and install XP to it.

The instructions that were left for me on transferring my info to another
system, were great & very easy to understand. As soon as time permits, I
will use those instructions & take care of my problem. Thank You!!!

not to surf the net but to google for solutions and to fix windows.

If it helps, knoppix is disc, a cd, which you could burn, or create, from
a working computer. once you have the knoppix disc, you can boot into
knoppix. it's not window, it's not a mac, it's a different kinda thing.
knoppix is designed for troubleshooting. it can be found at <http://
www.knoppix.org/>, if that's the direction you're going to take.

Anyhow, sounds like it's really a data recovery situation?

In that case, you could still use knoppix to boot up from the cd, then
read the files from the hard drive. depending on the specifics, that
might be the easiest thing to do. how many files there are, how many
optical drives there are, whether or not there are USB flash drives (like
mp3 players) or USB hard drives for storage, etc.

Are you trying to fix the ntldr to boot windows, or strictly want your
data back? How much data?

Hi Peter,

I have a similar problem. My wife thought she was doing a system restore and
perform a system recovery. Now I'm receiving the error NTLDR is missing. Is
all my data gone or is there a way I can save it.
