NTFS.SYS file corrupted

My wife's computer has Windows XP Professional. She has not downloaded any programs and her computer is scanned every evening with Norton's AV updated daily. I shut the computer down yesterday and when I tried to reboot the computer, I received the NTSF.SYS file missing or corrupted. The shut down appeared to be normal. I have rebooted with the XP disk and pressed R for repair. The computer then goes to a C: prompt. When I type DIR it gives an error message that "An error occurred during directory enumeration." I have typed in the recommended cd(e:) \windows\system32\drivers but get a message that the command is not recognized. When I go to the E: directory with the Windows disk and try to run setup I get the same message that the command is not recognized.

If you can get to a Command Prompt window, try running the "System File
Checker". This system will check for all OS files to see if they are
present/non-corrupted. Any missing or corrupted will be replaced/repaired
using files from your OS CD [have it handy].
In the Command Prompt window, type "sfc /scannow" (minus quotes AND be sure
there is a space after sfc, then press the "Enter" on your keyboard. This
should start the tool. Hopefully this will evade you of wifely distress.
