NTFS permissions

Hi

I have inherited a server (happens to be Win2K) that has a folder on it that
I can't access, even when logged on as the machine's Administrator.

Apparently, someone was "investigating" the security settings and it's
thought that they managed to remove "everyone" from the security
permissions. This might not be what they've done, but the result is that
when I try to open the folder I get the message:
folder x is not accessible
access is denied

Is it possible to reset the permissions?

If not, is it possible to delete the folder - it's been agreed that we don't
need any of the content.

Thanks in advance

Griff

Try taking ownership of the folder and then change its permissions. (This
is done through the advanced section of the security tab.)

If a user has set an explicit deny rule where the above is not possible, you
either need to figure out who made the change and undo the changes under
that account, or mount this drive on another computer as a slave and do the
above.

Hi Neo

Thanks for that.

Unfortunately, the Security tab does not appear when I right-click on
"Properties".

If I manage to mount this drive on the another computer, will the "Security"
tab be visible?

Thanks

Griff

Unfortunately, the Security tab does not appear when I right-click on
"Properties".

First, open up a folder (any folder will do), press Tools in the
file-menu->Folder Options->select the View tab->scroll to the bottom and
make sure "Use simple filesharing (recommended)" is not checked.->press OK
to save your new settings.

There, now you have the security tab

Windows 2000 does not work that way.

No, mounting it elsewhere will not effect that.
Are you sure that the filesystem is NTFS ?
