If I am running Windows XP with master hard drive
formatted with NTFS and a slave hard drive formatted with
FAT32, could this cause hardware problems on the hard
drives?

I have been told this type of configuration could result
in data loss or a hard drive 'crash'.

No.

I wouldn't much trust the person who gave you this "advice"... (-:

Greetings --

WinXP can read FAT12 (the file system used on 3.5" diskettes),
FAT16, FAT32, CDFS (the file system used on most CDs), and NTFS with
equal facility. Further, the file system on any one disk/partition or
diskette has absolutely no affect upon the operating system's ability
to read other compatible file systems on other disks/partitions.

Nor can a mixture of file systems on different partitions or
drives possibly cause any sort of damage. Whoever told you that was
either joking, or is a complete fool.
