NTbackup quits when tape is full on 2003

I am trying to backup 20 GB to a DDS 3 tape (12/24 GB) tape. The tape gets
full at about 16 GB, but instead of prompting for another tape, NT Backup
quits. I have seen some blurbs on the Internet about MS writing an article
Q839591 about this, but I have not found out if there is any work around
yet.

Is there anything I can do now to get this running now. I am in a real
pinch because my normal AIT 35/90 GB which can handle all the data on one
tape has died.

BTW, I can't just specify half the data across 2 sets because 18 of the 20
GB is Exchange 2003 and I can't split that.

How are you running NTBackup? In my experience what you are seeing is
unusual. When you say "it just quits", are there no messages in the
backup log?

Try backing up to a file to see if the problem is with the tape drive.
Check the Event Log.

There is no error message. This is a verified problem. Check out this post
from an MCSE site. It shows that this is known, but it does not show the
work around or any patch other than calling MS for $245.

Hi,

Thank you for posting back with the detailed information.

I would like to confirm if you experience the below symptom:

When you schedule a backup by using the Windows Backup program in
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Windows Backup quits unexpectedly when the
backup tape is full. Additionally, if you view the backup log file, the
following information is displayed:

The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted.

You expect Windows Backup to prompt you to insert additional tape and to
then complete the backup operation.

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:

- You schedule an unattended backup on a stand-alone tape device.

- The tape device requires more than one tape to complete the backup
operation.

This problem occurs because of a design change in Windows Server 2003. In
Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows Backup prompts you for an additional tape
when the first tape is full. However, Windows Server 2003 was changed so
that you are no longer prompted to insert additional tape during an
unattended backup operation. This change was made because, frequently, no
user is available to insert additional tape during an unattended backup
operation.

This issue will be discussed in KB article Q839591, however, this article
has not been finished yet. So, currently, it does not have public link.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product
Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit
