Hello everyone. I'm having trouble getting a new machine running xp pro and backup exec to erase my existing tapes. Veritas support tells me to use ntbackup to erase the tape's header information, then backup exec will be able to see the tape as new and use it. Well, I can't get ntbackup to view the tape - or any tape for that matter. XP says the drivers and device are cool, it just cant read the tapes to erase them.

Veritas support site suggested that i use the command ntbackup.exe /nopoll. That doesn't work. When I do that, I get a quick screen flash then nothing happens. I am supposed to get a menu to erase the tape.

Anyway, I'm stuck and I'm hoping someone here can help me get my tapes erased so I can use backup exec. to backup stuff.

Thanks!

Are you really using tapes to back up? Try an alternative
medium like CD, DVD, external hard drive or networked
drives.

tapes are old and wear out, and windows will probably not
support them correctly.

Huh? Many places regulary back up on DAT. Our servers would never be
able to be backed up on CD (way to much data) or DVD for that matter.
Tape is still a preferred media for large scale back up operations.

My question to the OP is this: what type of interface does the Travan
drive use? If it's a floppy interface, write it off. XP does not
support travan drives that plug into the floppy interface.

This is on the sec. IDE cable with my dvd/cdr drive.

The drive is recognized, I just can't get to a point to
erase the tapes. All options for the media tools are
grey.

Thanks
