Network specs

NT 4 SP6 PDC
DNS Primary on windows 2003 Server
DNS Secondary on 2003 Server
DNS zone is XXXXX.com same as external namespace

During the dcpromo wizard on PDC I entered xxxxx.com as the domain
name. Came back with an error stating the currently configured dns
server does not support dynamic updates because of the use of single
label DNS names. I then cancleed the upgrade and reverted back to the
mirrored drive I pulled before the upgrade attempt. I then procedded
to research the error message pertaining to single label DNS names.

All google queries have referred me to this KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=300684
Since I do not have a single label domain name why did I recieve the
error message? If I proceed will the clients not be able to dynamicaly
update their records in DNS?

2 thoughts:

1) Are you absolutely sure you didn't fat finger the dns name and miss
the period?
2) Are you sure the name you keyed isn't already registered with
internic?
Run nslookup
key in xxxxx.com and see if it comes back with an ip address
If it does my guess (Note the word guess) the system saw the
name and something didn't run as expected
Make sure the domain name you choose isn't use on the net
Once you get a name spend the $8 to register it (GoDaddy.com
charges $7.95) your company can afford this much

Sorry I'm not of more help

Thanks for the reply Paul.

1. Yes, I am absolutely sure I did not fat finger the DNS name. I
tried it 2 different times.

2. NSLOOKUP xxxxx.com does return the DNS server name and the IP
address as well as the domain name. We use the same domain namespace
internally as we do externally. I understand the ramifications of
using the same names, but there is not much I can do about it know. It
has been in place for some time now and I have to be able to use the
existing zone after the upgrade. The doamin name has been registered
and will continue to be registered.

Could the dns be pointing to the external name space instead of the internal
name space? I assume the external name space is static where as the
internal is dynamic.

Our current Internal DNS servers are running on windows 2003 and are
static. The options we have are
Allow Dynamic updates: None or Secure and insecure

Currently this is set to none.

Do I have to set this to allow secure and insecure in order to proceed
with the upgrade??

You'll need to have some kind of dynamic updates happening. Whether you go
for secure or non-secure will depend on your environment (and you're
security practice).

But for DCs to register their SRV records, and for effective name resolution
you must have Dynamic DNS.

To start with set it to allow (insecure).
