NT Backup utility won't recognize external hardrive

How can I get the backup utility extracted from the XP
disc to recognize an external hardrive? Windows
recognizes the 2.0 usb cable but not the hardrive.
Thanks for any advice.

XP's backup doesn't recognize any removable store (other than tape). You
need to backup to someplace on your C: drive and then copy to the external
drive.

Ntbackup is very limited in what it will do. Its roots are NT, and that is
getting pretty ancient by computer standards.

Consider getting some real backup software that is designed for XP,
removeable hard drives, etc. I have had good luck with Acronis TrueImage
(version 7) and a USB 2.0 hard drive. GHOST 2003 has some ability to handle
USB, but it is more particular about exactly whihc USB port is used.
