I have domain with 2 DCs, both 2000, there are no more NT domain controler in this newtork... NT domain name was something like (let say) NTdomain1, whoever did this upgrade (it was before I came 'on board') gave the domain new name which matched registered public domain name .... NEWdomain.com
eventhough both DCs are win 2000 domain is still in mixmode other words, he never switched it no native mode after upgrade.... my question is
1. is there a way to get ride of the old NT domain name? users still see NTdomain1 when they logon... when doing something I can use either NTdomain1\user or (e-mail address removed)
2. because NT domain name and AD domain name are different should I expect something unusuall while switching to native mode?

Thanks
Raf

You cannot rename the Doamin in 2000. But you can rename a native Windows
2003 domain if you dont have Exchange. If it is really necessay, you have
to do another migration from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003. You can change
the NetBIOS and DNS Domain name during the migration process.

You can have NetBIOS name different than the DNS Domain name.

I suspect you know (some of) the answer:
If you are willing to temporarily return to NT domain, and re-install
all the DCs.

Install or use an existing BDC -- remove all Win2000+ DCs from the
network.

Promote the BDC to Primary. Perform the domain rename as
per the KB article found in Technet or elsewhere at Microsoft.

Upgrade the BDC to Win2000 and make sure the DNS name
matches you choice.

Once successful and tested, DCPromo cycle or re-install all
those offline DCs to servers -- DCPromo may require
/forceuninstall (sp?) switch in some cases.
2. because NT domain name and AD domain name are different should I expect
something unusuall while switching to native mode?

No, but it will forever be confusing to you and to users.
