Now that Vista is on the market, how do you like it?

I am taking a required computer class for my major in college, this is my
return to school after my children have left the nest. We are discussing how
well Vista is being received by the consumers. I was wondering what the most
annoying or negative aspects that you have found in the new system as well as
the good points. Should I upgrade my laptop? I purchased it last summer, but
I don't know if it meets the requirements. So I am looking into it.
Thanks for any replies, in advance. They will all be usefull.

For me, it's the best OS ever. However, I got my Vista preloaded on a new
computer from Dell -- that way, all the drivers, hardware, applications,
etc., were already worked by Dell to be compatible with each other. Haven't
had even one glitch in over a month of hard use. Nevertheless, I don't know
about "upgrading" your OS from XP to Vista. Some people have had problems
due to hardware (and some software) incompatibility. Let's see what others
have to say. Good luck.

Hi Beth,

Me personally

First week was like treading water, finding around new operating system and
visiting here helped tremendously.

Second week finding out about software upgrades / changes needed even
though upgrade check didn't say any issues.

Fourth week starting loving it finding out about all the new stuff.

After a couple of months later after not really loading loads of stuff on it
noticing it has got slower, starting up is definitely 3 times as long ( yes
I know about startup programs etc) Had 1GB RAM and now 2.5GB RAM (page file
increased) made a difference for a couple of days then back to normal...
Still reviewing this issue. As it was an upgrade am thinking of flattening
and reinstalling from fresh.

Friends, some bought the basic 512 RAM pcs and whilst is ok for Vista, I
would forget it, even 1GB... if need Vista to run to its full potential I
would say need 2 GB RAM.

Hope this helps

p.s sometimes, only sometimes I wish I had XP, but then had been using that
for a few years .

I have Vista on a test machine and so far it's OK. The exceptions are there
are no printer drivers for my laserjet printer yet (HP says they are coming)
and my development software has quirks with Vista so I need to develop using
XP. Vista is slower and copying files are painful. I'm not sure what the
problem is there, I guess the beta testers just missed that one.

I have Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere on Vista and they seem to work OK.

If you want to upgrade your laptop, go to the vendors sites and make sure
there are Vista drivers for it. You might want to wait until the service
pack comes out later this year as that will do a couple of things. Fix
annoying issues with Vista and give the manufacturers time to get their
drivers to market.

Vista does churn the Hard Drive alot because of automatic file indexing,
defragging, etc... and startup is about 20% slower than XP.

Other than those things, its really OK.

Are you doing regular maintenance?
Down load IOLO's System Mechanic for a months free trial
and let it loose on your system.
It's well worth getting tools to keep your system clean and tuned.

Vista is awful, Don't waste your money. It tries to stop you at every turn
and almost everything I used in the past has compatibility issues. I
recommend getting something with XP which worked just fine.

Three things to note:
1) an increased need for more system ram (1 gig min)and video ram (256
min) because of the way Vista utilizes both. Very different from XP.

2) the possible need for updated hardware and software drivers from
their manufacturers/distributors. I say possible because some existing
drivers will work.

3) the biggest shocker to most of the uninformed and ill informed is
that the location of some things in Vista is different than XP.
This really frustrates some people. There is a new learning curve.
Otherwise...I personally like it very much!

I've been really impressed. There are all sorts of nice little touches -
polish, really - in the user interface which make it loads better than XP's.

I've had no problems with performance, reliability or stability, except for
very slow file copying over the network (which Microsoft knows about and is
working on).

I've studied the technical information on 'Channel 9' and the white papers
on Microsoft's web site, and I'm impressed by the substantial engineering
improvements under the hood, which will make the OS much more secure, fault
tolerant and resilient.

It'll take a while to settle, obviously, but I think it's going to be a hell
of a good OS.

Frank, I think just about everybody is sick and tired of you implying
you're some kind of Windows Guru and eveybody else must be one of the
unwashed uninformed masses you keep making snine remarks about.

Yes Vista is "different" than previous versions of Windows. Not that
much really and surely not enough to prevent users of previous
versions to have any major problems navigating around. The REAL issues
is Vista still has some of the same things that were "broke" in prior
versions of Windows and for good measure added more. THAT is what
pisses off people and for good reason. Windows has NEVER truly been
fixed. It has been around in one form or another for over 21 years and
till this day in many areas remains broke or seriously flawed. You
being a true blue fanboy defend that half-ass Microsoft policy and
just haven't figured out how damn funny it is to read comments from
those like you that also defend the undefendable blindly without
thinking.

Personal thoughts.

I don't care for it much. Currently it doesn't do anything better than XP
for me (please note that). In fact, I think it's been cater too much for the
new user and doesn't offer enough power tools for the power user. I don't
like the Aero shell, I hate IE7's new layout. Instant Search, superfetch and
readyboost don't serve me any purpose. The User Account Control, is just
annoying

But this is a personal taste thing. Normally for me to really like
something, it has to do something that I actually use or find fairly handy.
I haven't found such a thing in Vista. Sometimes it feels like the OS is
working against me. I've been playing with it since the RC releases and have
had it installed full time since late Dec.

My main perspective is that of a video gamer and currently Vista doesn't
offer any improvements over XP, and in most cases (as noted by most gaming
review sites) is slower than XP. At this moment, it's like feels like I need
a V8 to do the same work a V6 was doing

Only stupid people actually like vista, because vista is stupid.

Period.

Let me send you the trophy for most delusional newsgroup poster of the year!

Frank you are destroying people... and you are being irresponsible

don't advise them to get vista.... spend their money and then have
problems...

You can say that your personal experience is good.. but WARN them
that vista is very unstable and has huge problems with compatibility
and thousands of bugs.

Beth

Using a support newsgroup to get this type of information is not likely to
get you a very impartial or unbiased indication of the information that you
are looking for.

1. Most people here have already bought Vista and are getting support for
issues they may be having. These
issues may be due to Vista or some third party product or hardware.

2. This is like going to a hospital and asking people how they feel about
the state of their health.

3. This is where many of the Microsoft / Windows / Vista detractors
congregate. The opinions of these folks may
have nothing to do with Vista, since many of them have not even
installed this operating system yet.

You might get a more unbiased result if you simply browse the online
computer magazines or jump on a chat group. There are thousands of reviews
out there.

You start off with ... "So far it's OK" and then go on to say:

* HP Laserjet printer won't work ... the most supported printer in the world
amongst o/s's.
* Can't use your development software .. you either do little development or
else don't spend much time using Fista
* Copying files in Vista is painful. Heck, what computer user ever has to
copy files? Guess people can live with the PAIN.
* Vista churns the Hard Drive alot ... so it's wearing out your hard drive
and will lead to premature failure.

And you then reassure the OP "its really OK".

Just goes to show how little a Wintard demands from his computing
experience. That's why Microsoft is able to sell this bloatware. But I
guess even though it requires the resources of a $1500+ computer, "its
really OK". Sigh.

Guess those spambots are pretty busy during the bootup stage of Fista.

Back to the notorious Windoze BitRot? Figures.
Still reviewing this issue. As it was an upgrade am thinking of
flattening and reinstalling from fresh.
Isn't that the Microsoft way with all their toy operating systems? Run it
for awhile, then the bitrot sets in, the it's time to reinstall. Must be
fun using a Windoze computer that has to be continuously reinstalled.
Friends, some bought the basic 512 RAM pcs and whilst is ok for Vista, I

It does. It confirms what many of us know about Microsoft's ability to put
out a decent operating system. They can't.
p.s sometimes, only sometimes I wish I had XP, but then had been using
that for a few years .
Now that's a seal of approval for Vista. That's what many are saying. Must
be alot of truth to it, contrary to what the MVPs around here would have
everybody believe.

Regular oil changes, flush the rad, check the tires, add brake fluid, check
the hoses ...
Down load IOLO's System Mechanic for a months free trial

Then what happens after the free trial ends? Don't tell me, let me guess.
You'll have to spend more money to try and keep Fista running.
It's well worth getting tools to keep your system clean and tuned.

Yep, the Microsoft way. Microsoft is incapable of delivering an operating
system that just works and doesn't require a toolchest of third-party tools
to keep afloat. Only a Wintard could love it!
