Given my Word marging settings, can I write notes in the margins?

Are you asking how to write notes in a margin? I believe Tablet PCs may have
some capability in this respect - otherwise see

You could insert a text box using the Drawing tool bar and then drag the text
box outside your margins.

Great! Thanks for the quick response. I've been forced to use MS Word.
Learning another word processor is not exactly what I'd rather devote my
precious time to. There are many other, new things I have to learn every day.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

This one is complicated (and often counter-intuitive) enough that if you use
it at least an hour a day, you'll save time very quickly by investing time
soon learning it. A good place to start is
http://shaunakelly.com/word/concepts/introduction/index.html. You may also
want to look at the intermediate tutorial pages on my site (in signature
below). If you spend half an hour a day on learning for a couple of weeks,
within a month you'll recoup your time. After that, you'll have a net gain.

Thanks for the links. They are a nice resource.

I know quite a bit about formatting and layout. I really need "notes in the
margings" rather than indenting and things like that.

It worked like a charm.

The only challenge I had was finding where do I turn off the line outlining
the box. I looked in the "Style" setting for the "Line" itemunder the "Colors
and Lines" tab.

Believe it or not it did not occur to me to look for the "No line" setting
in the "Color" option menu. I guess there isn't much difference between
"color" and "style" as far as any possible hierarchical relationships to "No
line", so the MS Word solution fo this navigational issue is probably OK.
I'll just have to "get with the program".

Yet, I must point out that Microsoft's own FrontPage lets you control
"Border" of a page or paragraph under "Format" which is in "Style".

In my way of thinking there's is a closer affinity - albeit only by habit
perhaps - if not an outright paralell between "Format"=>"Style" and
WordPerfect's "Properties"=>"Borders/Fill" rather than MS Word's
"Format"=>"Color"=>"No line".

That is one example of the reasons why I didn't want to use MS Word. Perhaps
it's splitting hair, but result means more pain for me. That is why I care to
even address the issue.

you'll see a much easier way to do this using frames (which can be defined
as a style).
