Hello,

At a certain time, I appear to have lost the shortcuts to
Notepad (notepad.exe in System32). I now have to manually
open the program from the hard drive. Two other files
have been created named 'notepad.exe.bak' in the main
C:/Windows and C:/Windows/System32 folders. Why has this
happened? I cannot remember what I was doing however
nothing was deleted or altered as I remember.
Unfortunately, I cleaned out the system restore after
this incident so no luck there. The program is still here
but im looking for a few answers and info on how to
create these files again.

For shortcuts to Notepad, I did the following... Open the System32 folder,
right-click the Notepad.exe icon, and then click on "Create Shortcut" in
pop-up menu. Cut shortcut and paste where desired. Repeat process for more
locations.

If you are referring to re-creation of old Notepad files, I unfortunately
think that if the restore was "cleaned out", they're probably gone. look at
other answers as someone may know otherwise.

I'm not an MVP;
I don't pretend to be.
So the answer you see
Is what worked for me.

I managed to solve the problem by removing the ".bak"
extension on the new "notepad.exe.bak" files that were
created. The changed to the proper applications and work
fine. It appears Windows created backups before the
originals were deleted.
