notepad & extensions

Last month I got a new computer running WinXP Media Center Edition.

I notice it behaves differently than my previous machine that had XP Home,
in that I can't save a file with whatever extension I wish any longer.

For instance, I used to be able to name a file ".htaccess" but now it
insists on appending a .txt extension to the file name, making it
..htaccess.txt. I can then rename it to the correct hame, but that's kind of
a hassle.

Anyone know how I can fix this? There must be a setting somewhere, as it
didn't happen on my old machine, but I can't find it. I'm a webdesigner &
create / use .htaccess files often so would like to get this straightened
out.

Thanks so much!

Try the following,

Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
In Folder Options, click on the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings box, remove the check mark from the
box next to "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click OK.
Now when you go to save a file you can replace the .txt file
extension with .htaccess.

Good luck

Add quotes ("") around the name like this :

"example.htaccess"

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. When I enter the filename as
..htaccess, it still names it .htaccess.txt

And now, I'm not able to see any extensions - which is actually necessary
for my work. So, I'll switch it back.

I appreciate your time! And, good luck to the Patriots! :)

cheers ~

Thanks Ayush, that works perfectly!

A .htaccess file doesn't have a file name, just the .htaccess extension. So,
I saved as ".htacess" and it worked just fine.

Still wish I knew why I could do it on my old WinXPHome computer but not the
new Media Center one. But it's good to know how to get around the problem, &
I much appreciate your help!

cheers!
