"Not Yet Classified"

Just installed Windows Defender, and while browsing through the app I noticed
something odd. Windows Explorer and Internet Exporer are both listed as "Not
Yet Classified".

Is this right? Or is something weird going on?
You would think ..... both would be "permitted"

Hello ccrider,

What is the version of Windows Defender? Please go to Help, about, and post
the top most of the three version numbers there.

Mine indicates
WD v. 1.1.1593.0
Engine v. 1.1.2204.0
Signature v. 1.15.2323.1

Does that check out with you?

So far, such appearances haven't been traceable to "something wierd."

Depending on where you are seeing this--there's one place where the
"verdict" column can take a while to get updated--but I think the wording is
different from your description here.

We've also seen that leftover beta code can cause this kind of appearance
for what is assumed to be a released application.

On my XP SP2 system, in Software Explorer, startup programs, Microsoft
Windows Explorer is listed as "permitted." Windows Internet Explorer
presently says "in progress"--but that's the one that takes a long time to
fill in.

I am using Defender's Software Explorer - Category: Currently Running
Programs - in the "Classification" column ..... All Microsoft Corporation
Programs are listed as Permitted except Microsoft Windows Explorer : 2096 and
Windows Internet Explorer : 2656

I've never used the Beta of Defender or IE7.
I've been using the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool updates until
today....just installed Defender.

Could this be a problem?

Mine say "In Progress" when first starting the app, but then change to "not
yet classified"

Interesting--but I'm still not worried, but then I tend to have a sunny
disposition!

So--Windows Explorer, and Internet Explorer are both showing not yet
classified?

And, presumably, you and I both have applied the most recent set of critical
updates--which I believe patched Internet Explorer--not sure about Explorer?

I guess the next question would be to ask for version numbers of those apps:

In IE, if I go to Help, about, which is a little tricky--I see Version
7.0.5730.11

It appears that Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer will always be
categorized as not yet classified. The reason may be that any
add-on/extension to these products would have to be known to Windows
Defender. I don't know how to make that happen.

Yea......I read that in the Defender Help file under "Using Software
Explorer" this morning.

Thanks for your response!

I read that in the Defender Help file under "Using Software Explorer" this
morning.

"Note: Some programs that ship with the operating system, such as Internet
Explorer or Windows Explorer, can be described as Not yet classified. This
occurs if Windows Defender detects that additional software, such as a
browser add-on or another software utility, is running with the program."

I assume this is what I am seeing.

FYI - My IE is also 7.0.5730.11

Thanks for your response!

Excellent--shows how recently I've read that help file! Thanks!

I don't know if this is really relevant or not, but one thought comes to
mind: I've seen instabilities in IE7 when older add-ins have been
installed--usually in upgrade situations. It might not hurt to check on
your add-ins and see if you are on the latest version. Some of
these--Google's toolbar, for example, do have automatic update mechanisms, I
believe, but this may be worth checking.

Well - not always--mine aren't--but then, I don't have any add-ins!

I'll try to remember to look at this on office machines next week--It may
well be that any add-in results in that status.

Just another case of Microsoft's right hand not knowing what its left hand
is doing.
