Not enough memory with 4 GB???

I just got Vista this april for the first time
Vista Ultimate 64 bit to be precise.
It came with a new computer that has 4GB of Ram...which I thought would be
plenty, but apparently not?

Right now I have 4 programs running: Sony Vegas, Zune, Firefox and MS Word.
Including all the background tasks like firewalls and all that good stuff, it
says I'm using 2.65 GB memory. Ok I still have about 1.4 GB left right?
Wrong...I have 12 MB?

2000 MB are cached.

Whats up with that?

Now Sony Vegas keeps crashing because I dont have enough ram and I cant open
Windows media Player because I dont have enough ram....What happened to all
my memory????

PS: Is it normal for my wireless network adapter to use 265 Mb ram?

Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced Settings/Advanced Settings/Advanced Tab
(next to visual settings). What does it say in the Virtual Memory section
for total paging file size? You can also click the "Change" button and make
sure the box is checked for "Automatically manage page file size for all
drives". Regarding cache memory it should automatically be made available
to applications as needed so it shouldn't matter how big it is. When you
say Sony Vegas is crashing due to lack of ram, how do you know that? Are
you getting a specific message to that effect?

There's a lot said around the place about how Vista uses resources, but
leaving aside the snarky comments about how it behaves, the point is that it
works differently from Windows XP. Vista will attempt to find a use for
every bit of memory it can find in your system, because memory that isn't
being used is memory you wasted money buying. It's supposed to free up
memory from being used in one area when it gets a request to use it in a
different area, and normally shouldn't do too badly at that.
Now Sony Vegas keeps crashing because I dont have enough ram and I
cant open Windows media Player because I dont have enough ram....What
happened to all my memory????

How do you know that these things are failing because you don't have enough
ram?

The total paging file size is 4394 MB.

On my side bar it says that I am using 72% of my RAM. Also now my wireless
adapter says its using 350 MB of my RAM????

I thinks Sony Vegas is crashing due to the ram because windows media player
wouldnt play because it said I didnt have enough ram and because If I were to
open another program with the ones I already had opened, Vegas would stop and
I wouldnt be able to preview my clips, move them...nothing would happen.

Do I just have to give it more time to free up RAM or what?

Run Sony Vegas for a while, then open the Task Manager - how much ram is it
using? Regarding your wireless adapter you may want to see if there's an
updated driver since the memory use does sound excessive.

It also never hurts to do some disk maintenance when the computer is having
problems so:

Open My Computer and right click C:, select properties and you will see how
much of the drive is used/free. Run Disk Cleanup and check all the boxes
except The Hibernation File ( if you use hibernation) and Microsoft Office
Files (if you have Office). You can also delete the accumulated System
Restore points if you don't need them to free up additional space. Defrag
the drive.

Well when Vegas starts up it runs around 80MB not doing anything. Although
when I start playing a preview, it jumps up to around 120 MB. Could this be
the problem the computer is having?

Also I run CCleaner and spybot like every sunday or so. Is that good enough?

Ram usage for Vegas sounds reasonable. The point of checking is to
determine if there's a ram leak (where ram usage keeps rising indefinitely)
and that doesn't seem to be happening. I use CCleaner too and believe it
does a good job cleaning up. You mentioned getting an insufficient memory
error message when trying to run Windows Media Player. Do you get that all
the time, or only when Vegas is also running? Have you checked on the Sony
site to confirm you're running the latest version of Vegas? And are you
sure it's compatible with 64 bit Vista? I looked at the system requirements
and it doesn't say specifically if 64 bit Vista is supported.
