Not booting, not even in Safe mode

I'm having an absolute nightmare at the moment

My machine will not boot, at all, not even in safe mode
I am running
WinXP Home SP2
On
Athlon 2200+ (1.8)
512mb RAM

My BIOS does it's memeory check, then windows starts, I get the XP screen
with the 'loading line' on the black background, then when the screen turns
'WinXP blue' the system hangs, this is both in normal & safe mode
I have tried running last known good configuration from the start-up menu,
but the result is the same

I'm getting lost without my XP

Please can anyone provide me with a few pointers

I am currently running a Linux operating system from my CD drive (Knoppix
Live CD)

A repair installation is likely your best option if you can't access the
computer with even safe mode. Some info and links here:
