not all pptp ports display in registry path (KB 271731) error 721

Hi,

When getting error 721 during a pptp connection i used MS KB article 271731
"pptp clients cannot connect to a pptp server that has multiple IP
addresses" to fix it.

This article suggests amending the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\\{4D36E972-E325-11
CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\<000x>

When following this path it only displays EIGHT on the TEN "wan miniport
(PPTP)(VPN-4-#)" (i.e 0-9) adapters that Routing and Remote access displays.

Im 100% sure im looking at the correct path (checked lots of times).

Any idea why only EIGHT are displayed ?

I had another NIC which was removed several weeks ago after discovering this
problem (and after going to SP4).

Thanks
Scott.

Hi Scott,

Only one of those entries correspond to pptp miniport. Check the entries and
pickup the path with the DriverDesc being WAN Miniport (PPTP). This is the
entry that corresponds to the PPTP miniport. The entries doesn't correspond
to the number of ports displayed in the Routing and Remote Access (if that's
what is confusing).

Thanks,

Regarding error 721 on PPTP on 2k, im getting this attempting and incoming
connection to my VPN server and also when attempting an outgoing PPTP
connection to any customer site.

I ideas why ?

Thanks
Scott.

Are you sitting behind a firewall or similar device. You may need to open
up Protocol 47 ( GRE ). otherwise, you may want to run the netsh command :
Netsh RAS Set Tracing Enable *

This will log what is going on with the connection attempts. These logs are
stored under %WinDir%\Tracing by default.
