Not able to do any calculations on an Excel sheet

I have a Excel file which is report created in Cognos(reporting tool). I'm
not able to do any calculations on this file.
Any suggestions on what could be the problem.

Sounds like automatic calculations are turned off. Try clicking
Tools/Options in Excel's menu bar, click the Calculation tab on the dialog
box that comes up, click Automatic in the Calculation section at the top of
the tab's panel and then click OK.

Most likely the data from Cognos came in as text so Excel won't calculate.

Try this..................format all to General.

Copy an empty cell and select the range of dat then Edit>Paste
Special>Values>OK>Esc.

Excel should now treat the data as numbers.

In addition to the earlier suggestions, check if the Excel file created by
Cognos is read-only. Then check the format settings for your numeric data.
