Lately I've been trying to install an Epson printer with
downloaded drivers from their site. The printer installs OK but I can't get the Status Monitor to
install. W2K reports STMSETUP.EXE as an invalid Win32 application. Epson isn't budging so is there
something wrong with my OS? I used to reformat and reinstall W98 quite often but I don't think I've
reinstalled W2K for almost 4 years! Runs pretty damn sweet!

Anyway, any help is appreciated.

several times...I'm told I can right-click on the file and select Compatibility Mode. However,
there is no selection.

OK, have to ask, you've downloaded correct drivers/status monitor for yr
o/s, printer?
The Status monitor will not function unless printer is directly connected to
sys and sys is configured for biderectional comms.
Assuming all above is ok, tried msconfig, download here,
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
Then hide all MS services, in Services Tab, then disable remaining. Under
StartUp Tab, disable all.
Reboot. Try to install Status Monitor.

That was a temporary printer while I was waiting for my new one which just arrived. New printer is
Epson CX5400. Printer is OK but Scanner wont work. When I try to install it I get an error that
the program cannot execute due to a configuration setting problem. When I plug the USB cable in I
get another error that
the required section was not found in the INF. Damn! I guess I will have to reformat and reinstall
W2K!

No, the relevant section (Imaging Devices) is missing from your
registry. This should be there by default so there is no section in
the INF file to create it, hence the error.

Try the following (FOR WINDOWS 2000 ONLY):

Save the following as a .txt file in notepad:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}]
"Class"="Image"
@="Imaging devices"
"Installer32"="sti_ci.dll,ClassInstall"
"TroubleShooter-0"="tshoot.chm,hdw_scanner.htm"
"Icon"="0"

Then change the extension to .reg
Double click onm the file to update you registry.

Thanks!
