Norton WinDoctor Error

I had been running MSAntiSpyware and have upgraded to defender automatically.
I keep getting the following messages from Norton:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" cannot access a necessary
file, "msvcp80.dll"

and

"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" cannot access a necessary
file, "msvcr80.dll"

How can I get these two files, and where should they be installed? I am
running XP Home and I used the standard install for the program.

I'm intrigued--you mention that you upgraded automatically to Defender? How
did this work--did you get a notification of some sort?

There's an easy fix for your issue, I believe:

Delete c:\program files\windows defender\MSASCui.exe.manifest

(assuming that Windows is on C and lives in \windows. Please adjust if you
are running Windows 2000 on D!)

I was able to cure the problem by doing a search and found the two missing
files in a strange system directory. I then copied them into c:\Program
Files\Windows Defender and re-ran Norton and it accepted the existance and I
don't get the error message anymore.

Thanks for the help anyway.

You may want to try my fix anyway--it's direct from Steve Dodson, of
Microsoft. Those files should not be needed.

I am confusd by your statement: "Delete c:\program files\windows
defender\MSASCui.exe.manifest". What does the word "manifest" mean in terms
of a file extension? I cannot find a file with the extension ".exe.manifest"
under Windows Defender in Program Files.

I'm speaking of a file extension. If you don't have a file with this
extension in the location you mention--then this shouldn't be an issue on
that system.
