Norton SystemWorks and Internet Security with SP2?

Minnie Bannister

I have just reinstalled XPPro+SP2 from scratch. I have Norton
SystemWorks 2004 Pro and Norton Internet Security 2004 Pro.

Should I install these? Either? Both? Selected components only?

Would I do better to get the 2005 versions, which I see advertised at
$9.95 each after rebates?

Whether you vote Democrat or Republican in November, the country will
still be run from boardrooms in the USA and elsewhere, not by your
elected representatives.

For peace of mind, install them. However if you have any computer savvy you
don't need that junk. Windows XP with SP2 is very effective in blocking all
items from affecting your computer. E-mail with attachments is another matter.
Don't open from unknown sources. Why don't you try without them for a while?
You'll be amazed how great your computer will work.

I own both of those products, along with XP SP2. Unless you already
have other antivirus software installed, you should install the Norton
AntiVirus component from one of the packages (it's in both). You may
also want to install a few select NSW utilities from NSW. (I use only
WinDoctor and SpeedDisk.)

I would avoid installing the firewall component of NIS unless you
completely disable XP's built-in firewall. Using both is a waste of
system resources, and can make troubleshooting more difficult.

After installation, make sure you immediately run LiveUpdate to get
the latest virus definitions and product updates.

The main error was/is your installation of Norton. Period. Remove it and
you'll be much better off.
