Norton slow on reboot;locks up computer for 60 seconds, why?

Using legal version of Norton 2003. Have updated it from its website.
Whenever I restart my computer everything works fine and pops up in the
systray fast except the Norton icon. After the desktop displays, Norton does
not show in the systray for a full 60 seconds and I cannot open my dial up
icon to connect to the Internet. I have to wait until the Norton icon shows
up in the systray first and then the dialup icon magically lets me open it
by clicking on it. Yet, I can open any other icon on the desktop by clicking
on it. It is just the dial up icon that is locked until the Norton icon
shows in the systray.

What is going on here? Is Norton trying to call home or something? I can't
see anything in the options that would stop this and I have actually tried
turning everything off in the Options, but it still does it. I never hit the
Register button in the Help section because my name and account ID shows
there, so I assumed I was already registered somehow. But do you think this
is because I have not registered?

I am having the same problem - although I can open any
files/folders during the lag time, just not any
programs/applications. This problem appeared after I
upgraded from Windows ME to XP.

I had a post on here about this the other day. Someone
suggested I uninstall NAV and reinstall it. That
apparently fixed their problem, but not mine. I had no
problems while NAV was uninstalled, but as soon as I
reinstalled it, the problem came back.

I can almost guarantee that mine's registered, so I can't
imagine that would be the problem. I know I'm no help to
you, but hopefully someone will be able to help both of
us. (I also have an email in to Symantec about this.)

I believe that Norton AntiVirus does not release the system for internet
access until it has completed it's checks for updates. This always occurs on
a boot to Windows. Turn off automatic updates for NAV and see if the same
happens.

The added security of knowing I always have the latest antivirus updates,
more than makes up for the inconvenience of having to wait a few seconds for
the program to go through it's checks!

Yes, I did. That issue didn't pertain to me nor could I
find anything else that did. Thanks.
