My new pc has a one month freeby of the norton anti-virus
program but am wondering if I should get rid of it &
download the free version of e-Trust EZ anti-virus that
came with my DSL service?
My e-mail is protected but am wondering which to use for
the rest of my computer?
Thanks, JD

I have zone labs firewall running & my e-mail is
protected through sbcglobal.net's server but when my free
month of Norton is up for the rest of my pc, I am
wondering if I should just download EZ-anti virus
software?
I guess my question is, is EZ-Anti virus software a good
program???
Thanks again, JD

I prefer the FREE version of AVG Antivirus. Click the link at the bottom of this post.
It has frequent updates. The FREE version of AVG and the FREE version of Zone Alarm
Standard firewall have kept my Windows XP system virus/worm safe. Symantec/Norton is too
system intrusive, a real resource hog, with lots of unnecessary GUI eye candy (it's slow
too).

The failure rate noted in parenthesis is how many times a product failed
VB's testing; i.e., number_failed_tests / (number_failed_tests +
number_passed_tests). This is NOT the same as how many viruses were
captured by each product, just how often a product failed to pass VB's
testing.

NOD32 (10% failure in 30 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?eset.xml

Norton Anti-Virus (20% failure in 30 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?symantec.xml

Sophos (31% failure in 35 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?sophos.xml

Norman (32% failure in 34 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?norman.xml

e-Trust (37% failure in 27 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?etrust.xml

Kaspersky (37% failure in 35 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?kaspersky.xml

F-Prot (39% failure in 18 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?frisk.xml

PC-Cillin (41% failure in 17 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?trend.xml

F-Secure (44% failure in 27 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?fsecure.xml

McAfee - Network Associates (53% failure in 32 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?nai.xml

Avast (68% failure in 28 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?avist.xml

Panda (75% failure but in only 3 tests, and testing stopped back in
2002)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?panda.xml

AVG (80% failure in 25 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?avg.xml

AntiVir (80% failure in 10 tests)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?antivir.xml

I listed the ones that I have heard about. Visit
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml for the rest. I
currently have Norton AntiVirus (my subscription runs out in May 2005).
For a replacement later, I was thinking of going with Kaspersky but
after seeing VB's history of testing these anti-virus products then
NOD32 looks better.

I use eTrust as a regular thing, and find it much less obtrusive than
the Norton Products (which put tentacles down in the system and tangle
with it). It is effective, and I have even been able as an experiment to
do the major upgrade to XP SP2 with it still in action. I don't advise
that - but would not even try with NAV around.

It's an OK antivirus. You'll have to pay for it sooner or later tho.
